Pride Parade Chicago!

Hey!
Last sunday the 27th marked Chicagos 41st annual Gay Pride Parade. It was a celebration of everything awesome and gay! The streets were packed full of people who came out to show support and join in the festivities. I would estimate nearly ten thousand spectators cheered on and at least another two thousand participants were marching. It was well worth enduring the heat and packed transit systems.
Many big names came out to show support. Everyone from the Chicago Blackhawks who brought out the Stanley Cup to local famed T shirt company Threadless. The parade was a major success, and I have so many images to share.

been a week or two

I have been super slow to update and way behind on informing everyone what has happend.
So here goes: I am in the Chicagoland area now finishing up school and trying to get a career started before I graduate. A few interviews here and there some assisting over there. Good experience so far. Been working with James Steinkamp going out on a shoot and learning from there.
Also had an interview that I believe played out pretty well at Hedrich Blessing. Have not gone out to work with the group yet, but hopefully soon. This summer could prove to be a very exciting and interesting beginning towards my career.
I have also been doing a lot of searching lately. You always hear the saying that if your hearts not in what your doing then its not worth doing at all. Well when I think about that and take it in, I know there is nothing else I would rather be doing. Everyone has needs that keep them sane and use what ever things to fill those needs. For me I love design, cleanliness, simplicity, beauty, and preservation. Those are pretty basic surface level needs, yet architectural photography covers all of them. Nothing inspires me more than a a beautiful structure that has every inch perfectly crafted and will be marveled upon for ages.

took a quick pic from my cellphone. My cat mittens is helping me move into my new room in Chicago. It was a long but fun drive with a quick stop in Albuquerque to visit Sparky.

Transcendental Meditation and my creative process

Hello,
I have not posted anything recent in awhile, nonetheless I’ve been exploring. Not places, but the mind. I recently began practicing Transcendental Meditation also referred to as TM. I am new to the practice so I would not call my self an expert, but what I do know for certain is how it effects me.
TM has been shown in many studies to reduce blood pressure, increase brain activity, lower cholesterol, and reduce stress. Basically all the benefits of eating cheerios in the morning. But what TM does for me is allow me to silence all the distractions in my head, and in the physical world. As a result TM increases my creativity and I have fully adapted the technique into my creative process.
TM is simple and anyone can and I believe should practice it. There is no religious affiliation or attachment, no required text, or anything special needed. It is simple. All you need to do is breathe for twenty minutes twice a day, quietly and calmly.
The way I practice is broken down into three segments: preparation, process, post results.
1. To prepare for a session of meditation I first stretch and adjust all my joints, whether it be cracking my knuckles, rolling my neck, or just loosening up.
2. My process consists of me sitting up rite in my chair, not leaning back upon it (this will disrupt the flow of energy), and placing my hands on my lap. Then I close my eyes and breathe, reflect inward. I do not try to focus on a thought, or no thoughts for that matter. I focus on being, that moment, each breath as it flows threw my body. It takes time and practice to enter my subconscious. Sometimes quicker than others, sometimes deeper than others, but every time I meditate it comes differently. On average I would say around the ten minute marker I feel inside myself. I continue breathing calmly threw my nose, and just continue to be. I do not come out until I feel ready.
3. The post process to me is a gentle comeback into the psychical world, I slowly open my eyes, maintain the same breathing patterns and continue to relax. I usually like to put on solo piano music afterwards and than journal my experience.
To be short: breathe, relax, submerge, and reenter with clarity.

HDR imaging and behind the scenes with Dave Hill

Hey!
So today I was surfing the web and came across one of my favorite photographers Dave Hill. He does pretty amazing HDR work for commercial and advertising purposes. So a quick few things:
1. What is HDR?
HDR is a set of techniques that allow a greater dynamic range of luminances between the lightest and darkest areas of an image than standard digital imaging techniques or photographic methods. This wider dynamic range allows HDR images to more accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes, ranging from direct sunlight to faint starlight- wikipedia

New toolbar, and the future of BrettBulthuis

Hey!
Long time no new post. But thats alright because a lot has happened and I have a lot to cover. For example for my avid readers you will notice the knew sidebar with icons linking you to all your favorite websites such as Facebook, Myspace, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Digg. By clicking on those icons a new window will open and provide context for you to share my blog on your webpage. I am a member of all those links I have provided so feel free to check me out on there. My current favorite place to put things is Digg.com. I am still new to LinkedIn.com, and am picking it up quickly.
But all in all very cool stuff. So go for it. Share my blog.

Six more months of school at Brooks Institute, than I am a graduated professional!
What are my plans for graduation? Thats a rather common question I get these days
So here it is, as it is, in my head:
1. Two month trip to China to live/work in Hong Kong come April. I found a connection there who can possibly hook me up with a place to stay and with a few open doors in the business world. So stay tuned for that because thats the main goal and focus.
2. Move to Chicago Illinois and set up shop down town. This would be the grand opening of Brett Bulthuis Studio. It is a commercial studio encompassing the fine aspects of professionalism in photography, but also is client communications.
Investors Welcome!
3. Internship. As vague as that is, currently in the process of compiling a list of professionals that I am targeting for an intern position. Stay tuned for more on that!
Those three blurbs are the current goals and aspiration I am aiming for.
I recently heard a quote from my Marketing teacher Anna Kwong
“I can, I may, I will” and that is exactly what I plan to do.

Last thing to toss out there. Here is an image by Roman Vishniac. Vishniac photographed Polish Jewish Ghettos in the mid 1930′s and has some pretty intense stuff. So this image is what currently has me perplexed.
